Highlights from our first KDrama Twitter Chat: Sept. 10, 2018
It has only been about a week since our last KDrama Twitterchat, but we had so much fun that we can’t wait to do it again! Announcing our next #kdramachat Monday, October 1, 2018 at 7pm CST.
In case you missed our first chat, here are the highlights. We were hilarious. 😉
Question 1:
Welcome to our very first #kdrama Twitterchat! We are SO excited to get to share our love of all things KDrama with you!
Q1: Please introduce yourself and tell us how you first found KDramas. What draws you to them? #kdramchat
— Drama Current (@DramaCurrent) September 11, 2018
Hiiiiii! @TheKThree 3 LA Women who discovered a love of #KDramas / #Coffee / #Chatting about said dramas OVER coffee…. Marisa & Jenn we’re welcomed by #DOTS and Karen’s entry was #BadGuy w/ #KimNamGil !
— The KThree (@TheKThree) September 11, 2018
Ha, I think I goofed by not replying with the first part of my answer…oops.~
A1 Part 2- I think there’s a lot to unpack with what draws me to them, but the way Kdramas focus on characters and stories as well as emotions is super appealing. 👍🏻#kdramachat
— SkyRocker📺 (@KdramasRock) September 11, 2018
Hi @KdramasRock! Yes, I think that is one of the ways KDramas set themselves apart from the rest of the world. Especially, in the way that they develop the emotions so gradually (unless we’re talking Lawless Lawyer. That romance came out of NO WHERE.)
— Drama Current (@DramaCurrent) September 11, 2018
Ha! I actually really liked the Lawless Lawyer loveline! It felt pretty natural to me.
(I admit though, I’m often very easily impressed/persuaded if I dig the actors. 😆)Kdrama production quality too these days is just great. The scripts are so solid and well done!#kdramachat pic.twitter.com/2DgoYK8Lyy
— SkyRocker📺 (@KdramasRock) September 11, 2018
His sexual charisma won her over lol
— Natalia (@soju_nights) September 11, 2018
oh I’m easy that way too…I will forgive pretty much anything if I dig the actors LOL
— The KThree (@TheKThree) September 11, 2018
I’ll stick around for a good looking lead. No shame
— wineandakdrama (@wineandakdrama) September 11, 2018
I DID appreciate that their relationship moved quickly to real ‘activities’ and not 2 adults that are content to simply hug….🙄
— The KThree (@TheKThree) September 11, 2018
I love the idea put forth by dramas that we’re supposed to believe Korea is populated by 30 year olds who’ve never done anything remotely sexual lol
— Natalia (@soju_nights) September 11, 2018
This is true I thought In my ignorance that nobody’s having sex in South Korea and then I watched “what are you wearing “and I thought oh my God their normal lolol
— TessLAUSKD (@LauskdTess) September 11, 2018
I need to see that #Kdrama about all the sexually frustrated adults running around
— The KThree (@TheKThree) September 11, 2018
A1- hi! I’m Natalia, live in the seaside city of Halifax. I got into dramas when I was really sick and was looking for videos to watch. I can’t really tell you what draws me to them, but there’s something compelling and heartfelt about them #kdramachat
— Natalia (@soju_nights) September 11, 2018
I’m the weird korean loving girl who always tells everyone they should try watching kdramas haha
— Natalia (@soju_nights) September 11, 2018
The amount of days I go into work and begin, “So the drama I’m watching…” One day she’ll watch. ONE DAY
— wineandakdrama (@wineandakdrama) September 11, 2018
I force my mom to watch them with me when I visit her. She’s not totally hooked but she does think Choi Daniel is a slice of gorgeous
— Natalia (@soju_nights) September 11, 2018
Do you tie your mom up or just use blackmail to get her to watch? Lolo
— TessLAUSKD (@LauskdTess) September 11, 2018
Haha she had her hip replaced and I was taking care of her, so basically she couldn’t leave and had no choice haha
— Natalia (@soju_nights) September 11, 2018
Bwahaha! My mom had surgery last winter and totally missed the opportunity to force her to watch KDramas with me!! #kdramachat
— Drama Current (@DramaCurrent) September 11, 2018
She resisted the first two episodes of Jugglers but then her inner creeper came out and she was like “well well well look at this handsome slab o’fella”
— Natalia (@soju_nights) September 11, 2018
HAHA. I need to meet your mom
— wineandakdrama (@wineandakdrama) September 11, 2018
Her exact quote was “his face reaffirms my belief in a benevolent god” hahaha
— Natalia (@soju_nights) September 11, 2018
Hello am from the Midwest where nobody knows what k drama is, I like k dramas because I like seeing relationships Develop even though some of these dramas drive me nuts because it takes him 24 episodes to even confessed that they like each other, also mother/ daughter, Family/dad
— TessLAUSKD (@LauskdTess) September 11, 2018
Question 2:
Q2 Which KDrama is your favorite to rewatch and why? #kdramachat
— Drama Current (@DramaCurrent) September 11, 2018
A2. I have to say Goblin, Healer and While You Were Sleeping. Oh My Venus may join the ranks. #kdramachat
— Jenniah Warner (@ADecentWriter) September 11, 2018
Healer gets all the love in my book. The story was tight and interesting. Ji Chang Wook and Park Min Young did a great job of creating really relatable, layered characters with tons of chemistry. And the action was intense but not “K2” level overwhelming. #kdramachat
— Drama Current (@DramaCurrent) September 11, 2018
I fell for it almost instantly, which may have to do with Ji Chang Wook. The story was so enjoyable and it felt so right. I have yet to watch K2, but it is on my list. While I was watching Healer and Suspicious Partner on Viki lots of people were bringing up K2. #kdramachat
— Jenniah Warner (@ADecentWriter) September 11, 2018
Here is the only reason you need to watch K2..I have saved you hours of your life. You’re Welcome. pic.twitter.com/98VmIXzHx4
— The KThree (@TheKThree) September 11, 2018
I had to pause and breathe for a second. Oh my…
— Jenniah Warner (@ADecentWriter) September 11, 2018
I know it’s tempting…BUT don’t let it suck you in! Rewatch #Healer – trust me 😬
— The KThree (@TheKThree) September 11, 2018
My husband loved “Live” and the K2, and he liked Signal, and- in a completely different genre- he also liked Goblin (more than I did I think) he also just told me he likes Oh my Venus (that was out of left field tbh)
— Natalia (@soju_nights) September 11, 2018
My mom also liked Oh my Venus…. I wonder why?? pic.twitter.com/Qmt03uHkg2
— Natalia (@soju_nights) September 11, 2018
For me the story careened off the rails at the end but how do you say no to that face 😍
— The KThree (@TheKThree) September 11, 2018
Just saw this and I was upset at the end too. But him coming back was everything. It also addressed the needy af brother of his father’s wife. That man worked my nerves.
— Jenniah Warner (@ADecentWriter) September 11, 2018
Oh THE LAST NERVE. I was just pissed that he did his lonely man on a hill for A YEAR!?!?! With NO CONTACT. because feelings. that was just #nobleidiocy on CRACK and infuriated me.
— The KThree (@TheKThree) September 11, 2018
Question 3:
Q3: What is the hardest part of being a KDrama Fan? #kdramachat
— Drama Current (@DramaCurrent) September 11, 2018
A3: I think the way it’s not widely socially acceptable to really be ‘into’ other culture’s entertainment is the biggest barrier.
Since as an adult I’m only now getting into it people are puzzled about the how’s and why’s of it all-if only I had started younger.#kdramachat
— SkyRocker📺 (@KdramasRock) September 11, 2018
I once was telling someone the story of Admiral yi Sun Shin’s victory, and they were like “why isn’t this a movie?” And had to be like “it is a movie. A very famous movie you haven’t heard of because western culture treats other cultures entertainment as entirely niche”
— Natalia (@soju_nights) September 11, 2018
YES…why does it have to be considered so niche?!
In this grand technological global society of ours, shouldn’t our expectations of what is niche change a bit? #kdramachat pic.twitter.com/79WuH8vXpU
— SkyRocker📺 (@KdramasRock) September 11, 2018
A3 the depression that comes after watching a very good Kdrama #kdramachat
— D.O.adlibs (@AdlibsDO) September 11, 2018
something that’s been hard for me is having to stop myself from gushing about my current drama obsession for fear of sounding like a crazy person. thankfully i recently found twitter…
— galeriadedramas (@galeriadedramas) September 11, 2018
I TOTALLLY AGREE WITH THIS! without twitter and dramalist which make me sound somewhat normal with my obsession with asian dramas, I think my friends and coworkers would have killed me by now
— Caitlin Connolly (@New2KoreanD2021) September 11, 2018
A3: NEVER ENOUGH TIME 😜
— The KThree (@TheKThree) September 11, 2018
A3: Living in a country where the fans don’t get together? We use to do Drama fan get togethers back home in PR, and I really miss spending time with the community in person. (A more general drama fan prob would be having to wait years until dramas are subbed – Japan/Taiwan.) pic.twitter.com/A98aCUQj5y
— Outspoken Artistry (@OutspokenEast) September 11, 2018
Convincing my friends to check them out! I have to convince them to READ before I can even convince them to watch “No seriously, you won’t even notice he subtitles, REALLY, they just fade away!” That is the biggest hurdle because they always love them afterwards. #kdramachat
— Drama Milk (@dramamilk_) September 11, 2018
Question 4
Q4: Which is your favorite currently airing KDrama? Why do you love it? #kdramachat
— Drama Current (@DramaCurrent) September 11, 2018
A4 #kdramachat
Devilish Joy really sucked me in last week. The beginning was half hour of the greatest romcom ever— Amanda 🍁 (@tearexmama) September 11, 2018
that first half hour really was a beautiful love story… i can’t wait for them to fall in love again ❤️
— galeriadedramas (@galeriadedramas) September 11, 2018
A4: I almost said What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim? and then remembered that’s been over for weeks now. Thirty But Seventeen/Still 17 currently tickles my fancy. I like watching the female lead grow and can’t wait for them to figure out how they’re connected. #kdramachat
— Jenniah Warner (@ADecentWriter) September 11, 2018
hehe Are you still in What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim world? Nothing wrong with that! 😉 pic.twitter.com/AmwvIKIkPh
— SkyRocker📺 (@KdramasRock) September 11, 2018
I don’t say this often, but I wish there hadn’t been a criminal background tragedy in the show and it just focused on pure romcom fun for all the side characters instead.
— Natalia (@soju_nights) September 11, 2018
Honestly, same. I wish I didn’t have to dislike the brother, even though in a way it wasn’t his fault. I wish we could have just had these two people being cute and navigating this new dynamic.
— Jenniah Warner (@ADecentWriter) September 11, 2018
Agreed! The best parts of WWWSK were the moments of chemistry between the leads. I guess the backstory was really a device to force them to be close even though they were from different spheres. But they didn’t really need to include the brother’s story. #kdramachat
— Drama Current (@DramaCurrent) September 11, 2018
I think maybe I could have dealt with the backstory a little better, if it wasn’t so weird. Like the parents even changed to boys name to fit in with all of this. Like what? #kdramachat
— Jenniah Warner (@ADecentWriter) September 11, 2018
Because that’s easier than going to a therapist? Lol
— Natalia (@soju_nights) September 11, 2018
Like, you that worried about a stigma? What happens if his mind does worse than take on the role of his little brother? What are you going to do then?
— Jenniah Warner (@ADecentWriter) September 11, 2018
Right? They could have gotten him a girlfriend instead of an existential crisis
— Natalia (@soju_nights) September 11, 2018
Exactly! Even the side characters got happiness.
— Jenniah Warner (@ADecentWriter) September 11, 2018
Like they could have hooked him up with the incompetent secretary or something! There was cute potential there
— Natalia (@soju_nights) September 11, 2018
It is weird how he didn’t get a “happy ending.” It is almost like the writer forgot him. Then again, maybe the point was that he got a bromance with his brother, rather than a romance. #kdramachat
— Drama Current (@DramaCurrent) September 11, 2018
His character casting was the worst part of the show for me. He just didn’t work. They should have cast am older actor for the role.
Maybe they realized it and that’s why he ended up more in the wings at the end— Amanda 🍁 (@tearexmama) September 11, 2018
A4: My ID is Gangnam Beauty. Hard to get through the beginning, but I did and it sort of bloomed into this show about self discovery, esteem and growing your own confidence. #kdramachat
— Cheryl (@Cherylfornia) September 11, 2018
Yes! I am in love with Gangnam Beauty. It has so much more depth than most dramas. Like the way it looks at all the different ways people reacted to her transformation. Not to mention the squee-worthy lead couple. #kdramachat
— Drama Current (@DramaCurrent) September 11, 2018
I went into that show not knowing anything about it and it blew me away as it progressed. It’s hitting some great points
— wineandakdrama (@wineandakdrama) September 11, 2018
Totally agree. I knew NOTHING. Not even what a Gangnam Beauty was…this show is really really satisfying.
— The KThree (@TheKThree) September 11, 2018
A4: #MyIDisGangnamBeauty is my favorite, though #Still17 is *right* behind it!
It’s been a blast watching how they adapted MIIGB from the webtoon & seeing how well #ChaEunWoo & the other actors played out the characters. The themes of the show are great too!#kdramachat— SkyRocker📺 (@KdramasRock) September 11, 2018
A4 cont.: #Still17 is simply a joy to watch. I love literally all of the characters and enjoy watching what happens to them each episode. Plus, Deok Goo the long haired chihuahua is life. Oh, and Jennifer is my lifelong role model. 💚#kdramachat
— SkyRocker📺 (@KdramasRock) September 11, 2018
Still 17 just makes you love life and feel so happy watching it
— wineandakdrama (@wineandakdrama) September 11, 2018
— galeriadedramas (@galeriadedramas) September 11, 2018
I mean, the silent star of the show
— wineandakdrama (@wineandakdrama) September 11, 2018
didn’t he stop the house from burning down st one point when the pot on the stove started boiling over…he’s a little hero
— galeriadedramas (@galeriadedramas) September 11, 2018
He’s there for the important stuff
— wineandakdrama (@wineandakdrama) September 11, 2018
i’m loving #ThirtyButSeventeen. i think i identify with being a thirty-something year old who is still trying to figure out how to be an “adult”. i loved it when Hee-soo told Seo-ri that no one really feels like an adult all of the time (or something like that)
— galeriadedramas (@galeriadedramas) September 11, 2018
As a 40-something I can say this – you will ALWAYS be trying to figure out being an adult LOL I often forget 😜
— The KThree (@TheKThree) September 11, 2018
Fake it til you make is way more prevalent than it should be hahah saying that as someone over 30
— Lulu | #TeamShinSquared (@Lacuna_1024) September 11, 2018
Question 5:
Q5: Which KDrama villain do you love to hate? #kdramachat
— Drama Current (@DramaCurrent) September 11, 2018
A5: Shin Sung Rok as Lee Jae-kyung in You Who Came From the Stars.
I was SO satisfied with his demise. #kdramachat
— Cheryl (@Cherylfornia) September 11, 2018
A5: Uh… this is hard. The Chief Prosecutor boss man whatever on Suspicious Partner. That man screwed over so many people, and just wouldn’t learn. He framed a man simply because he didn’t care to check his facts.
— Jenniah Warner (@ADecentWriter) September 11, 2018
a5: mean mother-in-laws are often cartoonishly evil but kind of fun to hate (although sometimes more frustrating than anything). the worst kdrama MIL i’ve seen is the one from the family drama “100 year inheritance”. she’s absolutely awful but later gets the payback she deserves
— galeriadedramas (@galeriadedramas) September 11, 2018
#kdramachat Can’t remember the specific ones right now but the historical drama villains are the worst of all. And not to forget the second female leads/ ex gfs from old kdramas.
— dramajunkie (@dramajunkie100) September 11, 2018
A5: There are a few who I really 😠, but I remember really disliking Jung YuMi in Rooftop Prince and being really freaked out with Nam GoongMin in The Girl Who Sees Smell. I’d sometimes tell my friends that the writers were in love with their antagonists. 😐 #KdramaChat pic.twitter.com/axB2Ox6Iz9
— Outspoken Artistry (@OutspokenEast) September 11, 2018
Everyone against main leads in Stranger…Every time they succeeded in finding answers, someone of the bad guys would drop a bomb and destroy everything…Also I am really mad at how Voice 2 is right now (on ep 9) cuz I don’t want the man the writers picked to be the bad guy!
— Caitlin Connolly (@New2KoreanD2021) September 11, 2018
A5 The evil ghost in goblin . Why did the goblin had to die ( or disappeared for a longtime) to kill him ? 😩#kdramachat
— D.O.adlibs (@AdlibsDO) September 11, 2018
Question 6:
We are about to wrap up. But one last question:
Q6: Did a KDrama ever change your life? #kdramachat— Drama Current (@DramaCurrent) September 11, 2018
A6: I think watching them and getting into hallyu has definitely changed my life. Met the best people and have learned loads about UX, social media and marketing on top of what I already knew. #kdramachat
— Cheryl (@Cherylfornia) September 11, 2018
.@Cherylfornia I’m so glad we could be some of your new Kdrama friends. KDrama fans are some of the best friends. They are so supportive and caring. #kdramachat
— Drama Current (@DramaCurrent) September 11, 2018
A6- Oh definitely! Overall/collectively Kdramas opened up my world a *lot*: expanded my love for music to now include Kpop, caused me to begin learning a new language, even inspired me to hop on Twitter for the first time ever…leading me to make new buddies! 😄#kdramachat pic.twitter.com/MIeZNGEoGI
— SkyRocker📺 (@KdramasRock) September 11, 2018
#DOTS opening scene made me realize I knew absolutely NOTHING about Korea. NUTH-ING. Immediately went straight to the googler & LEARNED. Now studying the language. Planning a immersion trip. Have a YouTube chn to talk about it AND have found people like y’all!!! So uh, YES. 🥳
— The KThree (@TheKThree) September 11, 2018
It is has been such a rewarding journey for me too. For the first couple years, I just immersed myself in the dramas, but after that I discovered the language and culture and FRIENDS. Every step has been better than the one before. #kdramachat https://t.co/6pOMLYSwlB
— Drama Current (@DramaCurrent) September 11, 2018
Q6: Not a specific one, but becoming a Kdrama fan has really enriched my life in so many ways. I’ve gotten to meet so many lovely Kdrama fans who are nowadays very close friends of mine. It’s media I honestly enjoy and makes me happy. No regrets.✌😎 #KdramaChat pic.twitter.com/vW6jR0LQcX
— Outspoken Artistry (@OutspokenEast) September 11, 2018
Boys over Flowers was my first dramas which led me to SHINee which snowballed into my obsession with Asian dramas and Kpop….I don’t regret anything!
— Caitlin Connolly (@New2KoreanD2021) September 11, 2018
K dramas put I spark in me I thought was long gone it put life back into me ,am interest in life now . Most likely because i learning something new
— TessLAUSKD (@LauskdTess) September 11, 2018
