Ji Hyun Woo Signs On for Remake of Japanese Drama “The Beauty”
Only a few months after his last drama “Risky Romance” ended, Ji Hyun Woo announced today that he has already chosen his next project, upcoming MBC weekend drama “I Love You When I’m Sad.”
The drama will be a remake of the classic Japanese Drama from 1999 “The Beauty” (aka “Utsukushii hito”) about a famous plastic surgeon who gets unwittingly involved with a dangerous woman. The original was 10 episodes of spine-chilling thriller-romance written by Shinji Nojima for TBS.
The story of “The Beauty”
Note: This description is for the Japanese version. Some changes will likely be made to the KDrama. We will just have to wait and see.
The tale of plastic surgeon Doctor Misaki Kyosuke(Ji Hyun Woo, originally Masakazu Tamura) starts off as a sad one. Four years ago he lost his beautiful, violinist wife in a tragic accident while she was on tour. The loss was devastating, and since then he has desired only to exist and raise their teenage daughter.
One otherwise ordinary day, a mysterious woman enters his clinic. Although her appearance is not bad, still she asks him to change her face…completely. She tells him that he can change her into any face he wishes.
Being a logic human being, Misaki Kyosuke initially refuses her request. But the woman is persistent. She explains that she is trying to escape from her abusive husband, and needs to change her face for her safety. Kyosuke’s heart goes out to her, and he at last relents. He decides to give her the face of his late wife. (Wait, what?!) Their relationship develops and they begin a passionate love affair.
Their happiness is shattered, however, when two police officers appear at the door in pursuit of a “missing” woman. In a moments time, they become the hunted.
My Thoughts:
Wowza, that is quite the story. I know they want to draw my attention to how mysterious the woman is, but I’m still stuck on the fact that this guy decided to recreate his wife’s face on her. He could have chosen anyone’s face, but THAT was the one he went with? Let’s add this to the pile of legendarily bad choices.
Hold on a minute, so if he goes on to have an affair with her and brings her to his house…then he must also introduce her to his daughter…with her mother’s face. In what world is this a good plan? “Honey, Daddy has lost it.”
All my quibbles with the story aside, let’s take a moment to raise our fangirl flags high. Hyun Jin Woo is in another drama already? Since when were we so lucky as to get our favorites in so many new dramas in a row? It feels like ever since the famous ’89ers enlisted, we have seen more and more actors taking multiple roles within the same year. Not that I’m complaining. Seo Kang Joon and Ji Hyun Woo can take as many roles as they want, as far as I’m concerned.
But I have to give it to Ji Hyun Woo, because he really does accept a wide variety of roles. In the past few years he has signed on for the intense thriller “Wanted,” activist dramas “Awl” and “Angry Mom,” makjang Robin Hood drama “Bad Thief, Good Thief” and romantic comedy “Risky Romance.” Some were hits and others misses — and I’m still waiting for a historical drama to bring back all my “Queen In Hyun’s Man” feels — but you have to give it to him for putting himself out there. Respect.
“I Love You When I’m Sad” is set to air sometime in February 2019 on MBC after “A Promise with the Gods.”

Definitely watching out for Ji Hyun Woo! He really needs a big breakthrough after Queen In Hyun’s Man. Then again in Bad thief, Good thief, I really liked his character as Jang Dolmok. Drama Hwaiting!
