8 KDramas Your Dad Will Love Watching This Father’s Day

You love your dad, you love KDramas, so why not combine the two? Father’s Day is the perfect opportunity to introduce your dad to some awesome Korean dramas. Not sure? Believe us, you’d be surprised how many great dramas will appeal to the men in your life. Honestly, we could list dozens of “Guy” KDramas, but these are our top favorites to get you started.

1: Descendants of the Sun

This KDrama has become a classic for a reason. Instantly appealing, the story about a female doctor who falls in love with a Special Forces Officer in a disaster zone has something for everyone to enjoy.

“Descendants of the Sun” is filled with intense action scenes and a pace that never lets up. Leading the story, Captain Yoo(Song Joong Ki) is a quick-witted, man of action who loves to make his woman laugh. Their humorous banter keeps the drama’s mood light and entertaining while the dangers around them mount. In fact, their chemistry was so intense the couple fell in love in real life.

But for many, the best parts of “Descendants of the Sun” happen in the bromance between its male leads. Captain Yoo and Sergeant Major Dae-Young(Jin Goo) are hilarious and real in their friendship, giving us such classic comedy as the KPop concert scene and such heart-breaking moments as their final…well, we’ll leave it at that. No spoilers here!

2. K2

If the James Bond films were a KDrama they would be “K2.” Filled with intense action, a broken but fearless hero, and a female literally waiting to be rescued, this drama screams “guy flick.”

Nobody’s judging here, so just say one of the biggest pluses to this series is how hunky gorgeous Ji Chang Wook is. You will enjoy the view just as much as your man. Allow me to make my case:

“K2” gave Ji Chang Wook some of the most dynamic action scenes ever put in a drama. Although it may be a bit over the top, like most guy flicks, this drama made him into a superhuman force of fury. And he looks so gorgeous doing it.

Plus, as I said, this show completely follows the checklist from James Bond. Damsel in distress? Check. Vengeful baddies? Oh yeah. Car chase and explosions? You betcha. Shirtless fighting? Okay, maybe that’s just a bonus.

3. Bridal Mask

“Bridal Mask” aka “Gaksital” is perfect for guys who love historical movies. Set during the Japanese occupation of Korea in the early 1900s, this drama is both epic and riveting.

The story follows Lee Kang-To(Joo Won), an unpatriotic Korean who serves on the Japanese police force in Korea. He is fully committed to his work, especially when it comes to hunting down the Zorro-like masked hero who keeps foiling the Japanese government’s plans. But Kang-To’s entire world is changed when he discovers who the masked hero really is.

Now realizing the “good guys” he has served were never the good guys at all, Kang-To decides to take on the masked role of Gaksital and become the hero his people need.

But while the action and suspense will draw you in, the bromance between Korean Kang-To and Japanese Kimura Shunji will keep you there. Beautiful in its sadness, we watch as the best friends, although separated by politics and grief, can never really stop loving each other. Their relationship is tender and strong — honestly, way more than the main love story.

4. The Time Between Dog and Wolf

Considering his talent for bringing strong male characters to life, it is no surprise that Lee Joon Gi has not one but two dramas on our list of great guy flicks.

Although a drama from his younger days, Lee Joon Gi’s talent for crafting strong men already comes through. In “The Time Between Dog and Wolf” Joon Gi plays a deep-cover agent with the Mafia who develops amnesia and begins to believe he actually is in the mafia.

Although beautiful and strong, Lee Joon Gi’s character is also a broken hero. Beneath his tough exterior, you will fall in love with a character who just needs redemption. Also, the romance between him and the female lead sizzles in a very non-PG way.

5. Two Weeks

In “Two Weeks” we see Lee Joon Gi take on a more mature male role as the lost soul who finds out he has a daughter — only to immediately learn she is suffering from leukemia and only his bone marrow can save her. But before he can give her the life-saving transplant things go horribly wrong and he is framed for murder. Now on the run, he must fight not only for his life but for the daughter he has come to love.

The story in this adventure is intensely tight. (Like I watched the whole thing in 48 hours intense.)

6. Circle

If your dad is a Sci-Fi fan then look no further than “Circle.” One of the most spellbinding dramas we’ve ever seen, “Circle” follows the mystery behind two brothers’ search for each other and their first contact with aliens. The drama’s story is brilliantly divided in half between the viewpoint of one brother in a devastated future and the other in the past.

Another bonus is that this is a shorter drama, just 12 episodes, so it is a great starter drama.

7. The Player

Think Ocean’s Eleven and you won’t be that far off when it comes to “The Player.” This drama is short and easily approachable even for KDrama newbies, while also offering a hot dish of awesome for long-time fans.

When conman mastermind Kang Ha-Ri(Song Seung-Heon) decides to go after the evil men who ruined his life he starts by creating a team of criminals to stop criminals. Intelligent and cocky, these merry men serve their justice just a little left of the law.

8. Arthdal Chronicles

With a style similar to “Lord of the Rings” or “Game of Thrones” this drama is the ultimate “guy drama.”

Set in the distant past, the main story follows Eunseom, a man who is only part human. When Eunseom was a baby his mother rescued him from the wicked rulers of Arthdal who were murdering his species and fled to a distant land. There Eunseom lived and grew up among a peaceful tribe, and even fell in love with a tribal priestess in training. But when the king of Arthdal’s greed threatens the lives of his new found-family, he must return to Arthdal and restore the balance.

Warning: Arthdal Chronicles does not hold back on authenticity, so if you are at all squeamish about blood or violence you may want to pass.
