Casting News: Seo Kang Joon and Esom in “Third Charm”

The Third Charm Seo Kang Joon Esom KDrama

In the midst of the success of his newest drama, “Are You Human Too,” Seo Kang Joon has just announced his next drama.  Seo Kang Joon will be returning to the small screen in September with “Third Charm,” the story of a couple in a long-term dating relationship.  I find the concept of a long term relationship in a kdrama intriguing.  The bulk of the time in kdramas romances will be shown as whirlwind rides from meeting to marriage, or a cumbersome series of meetings and breakups.  It will be refreshing to see a couple with the ability to “stick it out” without any infuriating cases of noble idiocy — at least that is what I’m hoping.

Joining Seo Kang Joon as the female lead is Esom(Because This Is My First Life). Esom has never let me down in her ability to create compelling characters.  Her performance last year as Soo Ji in Because This Is My First Life was one of my favorites (in what was my favorite drama of the year,) but I have loved her since the first time I saw her in the Drama Special “White Christmas.” (If you haven’t seen White Christmas yet, you haven’t lived.)  Although I am reticent to watch Seo Kang Joon’s dramas(still too burnt by Cheese In the Trap and Entourage), I may have to check this drama out for Esom.

Third Charm follows the story of two twenty-somethings, a university student(Seo Kang Joon) and a hairdresser’s assistant(Esom), who meet on a blind date and begin a long term relationship for the next twelve years.  Seo Kang Joon’s character is described as a obsessive planner, a dedicated student, and a sensitive soul — but who doesn’t really care about his appearance. Esom, however, is an emotional, vivacious, and honest woman with big dreams of success.  The clash of fastidious male and vibrant female are standard kdrama cliches, but Third Charm brings an interesting twist in having the male be less assuming and more awkward.

Third Charm is set to air sometime in September.
