New TV Chosun drama “Babel” announced for December
Cable Network TV Chosun announced today that they have begun casting for a new kdrama titled “Babel” (working title) which will air at the end of this year.
TV Chosun is unique among South Korea’s TV networks in that its broadcasting schedule is very sporadic. Their last drama, Yoon Si Yoon’s “Grand Prince,” finished airing in May. Although it aired on a small network, “Grand Prince” ended on a happy (for a cable drama) Nielson rating of 5.6%, so hopes are high that TV Chosun will be able to their success going.
“Babel” is being called a “mystery melodrama,” and will tell the story of the secret feuds and murders behind South Korea’s privileged business heirs (chaebols.)
Thoughts:
Although I’m always glad to see South Korea’s cable networks doing well (they have been responsible for most of my favorite kdramas), it will take some really significant casting to get me to watch another chaebol drama. That trope feels even more overworked than the famed “truck of doom.”
That being said, I think that “Babel” is a really amusing choice of title for a “mystery melo.” Can we expect a lot of miscommunications? Definitely. That just seems like a given in whatever kdrama genre.
“Babel” is planned to air in the second half of this year, possibly in December.
So what do you think? Do you plan to watch “Babel?” Did you like TV Chosun’s “Grand Prince?”
