Search: WWW, Episode 4

As usual, this episode begins where the previous episode ended. Park Morgan(Jang Ki Yong) has declared his interest in Bae Ta Mi(Im So Jung) and his desire to continue seeing her.

At Barro

The scene changes to one of Tammy/Bae Ta Mi on the rooftop at Barro, remembering the conversation of the previous night.

Joseph(Woo Ji Hyun) joins her on the rooftop and chides her when she addresses him as Choi Bong Ki. She replies that she wants an answer from him as a man and not an employee. She asks him how old he is and he answers candidly that he’s 28. The same age as Park Morgan. When she asks him if she’s pretty, he falters for an answer.

Back in the office, the team discusses keyword search trends. Currently, a missing young boy is at the top of the search list. Joseph says that in this instance he can definitely see the value of a trending list. Tammy says that she doesn’t like the lists. She doesn’t like the way that the portals can edit the list for whatever reasons suit their purpose. The list is created by real-time searches, People should be able to see what the real trends are. Scarlett(Lee Da Hee) objects to Tammy’s argument.

Tammy concedes that the search list helps generate revenue by keeping people on their site longer, but still maintains that she doesn’t like it. There are not enough rules surrounding how the lists are maintained. Tammy doesn’t like the ambiguity.

Later that day

Bae Ta Mi is working from a café for a change of scenery. She is surprised when she feels someone grab her leg. Looking down, Ta Mi sees Park Morgan coloring on her leg with a black marker. He tells her that there was a hole in her black stockings and he was filling in the gap so it wouldn’t show.

cheeky!

Ta Mi apologizes again for her part in the way that Morgan lost his job with Unicon. But he tells her that its not her fault. Morgan places the blame squarely on the shoulders of Director Song Ga Gyeong(Jeon Hye Jin). He surprises Ta Mi again by dropping to his knees in front of her.

After Morgan leaves, Ta Mi heads to a restaurant for lunch. She sees that Cha Hyeon/Scarlett is already there. Sighing, she takes a table by herself nearby. The two women talk about why they like to eat on their own. The waitress wonders if maybe they would like to share a table since they are talking anyway.

While talking about her college eating habits, Ta Mi suddenly remembers where she knows Pyo Joon Soo(Kim Nam Hee) from.

Back at Barro

Bae Ta Mi bumps into Pyo Joon Soo. He realizes from her expression that she has remembered who he is. He flirts and acts cute, talking about their “deep history together”. But Ta Mi isn’t interested in reminiscing about the “deep history” of two people who dated for a month 15 years ago. She speaks very rudely to him, telling him to get lost. Her tune changes quickly however when she remembers that he works in the games division.

Meanwhile across the street, a representative from the head office of Unicon Global has come to pay a visit. The head office is concerned that recent events have caused significant damage to the Unicon brand.

Quick rabbit trail:

The rep clearly calls the company “Unicorn” here. Unicorn is what I thought the company name was at the beginning. It would have been a way cooler name for a web portal than boring old “Unicon”.

Recap Resumes

After the meeting, Director Song returns to her office. Her secretary announces that Park Morgan is there to see her. Morgan asks why his company was fired.

Director Song starts with her excuses. But Morgan cuts her off, telling her that he’s not there to cause trouble and he’s not recording their conversation. He tells her that he’s not interested in whatever beef Director Song has with Bae Ta Mi. Morgan knows that Unicon doesn’t have enough time to find a new team to create good music for their game before it launches. He tells her that she fired him over something trivial so she should find a trivial reason and hire him back.

While Park Morgan works to get his old job back, Bae Ta Mi dines with Pyo Joon Soo in the hopes of finding Morgan’s team a new job. The conversation turns to marriage and Ta Mi struggles to keep her cool.

Boy, you’re about to get stabbed in the eye

Leaving her annoying dinner companion behind, Ta Mi texts with Morgan and they agree to meet up. Across the street from them, Pyo Joon Soo embraces who we assume to be his girlfriend. Ta Mi is not impressed in the least.

Morgan is also less than impressed that Ta Mi was out with another man before coming out to eat with him. He’s really starting to feel that fish tank metaphor of his. Ta Mi assures Morgan that Pyo Joon Soo is definitely not being kept in her fish tank. She tells him that they only dated for a short time when she was 22. This leads to another awkward conversation about their age difference.

After dinner

Morgan says that he has something that he wants to tell Ta Mi, but that instead he’s going to be selfish and keep it to himself for a while. After they part ways, Morgan drives his car up next to Ta Mi and motions for her to roll her window down. When she does, he tosses a package into her car and drives away with a grin. It’s a new pair of stockings.

Later that night, Ta Mi scrubs and scrubs, but she just can’t seem to get the two little marker dots off of her leg.

The next day

Cha Hyeon is enjoying her favorite trashy drama. She really loves the one horrible male character.

So much so that she pauses the show during the credits to find out his name. Turns out the actor’s name is Seol Ji Hwan(Lee Jae Wook.) Cha Hyeon tries to find out more about him, but there is no actor profile for a Seol Ji Hwan on the Barro site.

Later at work, Scarlett receives a message on her phone and quickly leaves the office. Still suspecting Scarlett as a spy, Tammy follows her out to a stairwell. There Tammy sees Scarlett meeting none other than Pyo Joon Soo. It’s clear that the two of them are in a relationship and keeping it secret at work. Tammy is furious with Pyo Joon Soo and goes to his office to confront him. Pyo Joon Soo offers to give Park Morgan a job if Tammy will keep the truth from Scarlett. Tammy says that she doesn’t care about the music director, but does agree to give Pyo Joon Soo the week that he asks for.

Later that evening

Ta Mi has a piano lesson with Jung Da In(Han Ji Wan,) the friend that she met back in episode 1. She asks Da In if she’s ever dated a younger man. Da In replies that she’s young enough that younger “men” aren’t really men to her at all. When Da In asks Ta Mi if she’s dating a younger man, Ta Mi says no. She says it’s more of a fling that she is trying to end. Just then, a phone call comes from Park Morgan asking her to come out and play. Ta Mi quickly agrees, ending her piano lesson early.

Ta Mi and Morgan meet up at an arcade, or bar… barcade? They decide to play darts against each other and Ta Mi proposes a wager. Morgan suggests that the loser will grant the winner one wish. Since Ta Mi is confident in her skills, she agrees.

Pride goeth before the fall, and once again Ta Mi loses to Park Morgan in a game. She thinks that he tricked her on purpose like some sort of darts shark. He reminds her that darts was her choice. Changing the subject, Ta Mi points out the still visible pen marks on her leg. She accuses Morgan of using a permanent marker on her on purpose, but he denies her claim.

Later on a park bench, Morgan tells Ta Mi that it’s time for her to grant his wish. She’s taken by surprise when he grabs onto her leg and lifts it up to his lap. He tells her, “These two dots, I’ll connect them,” and draws a heart.

After returning home, Ta Mi gets a text from Morgan telling her not to scrub too hard since the heart is precious. She finally changes his name in her phone to his real name.

The next day

At Barro, Elly is complaining about an ex-boyfriend who randomly liked one of her photos but has his own account set on private. She expresses a wish to hack into his account and see what he’s up to. Alex remarks offhand that one of their team could do that for her and begins to tell them a story of the past:

April 13, 2007 at 4:30pm

A 17-year-old Jenny hacked the traffic system of the city of Inju. Since the buses couldn’t come, she and a classmate decided to walk together.

When asked why she’d done it she replied that she wanted to spend more time with her classmate. She was sentenced to 180 hours of community service for the trouble she had caused.

Present Day

Tammy is troubled to learn that she has not just one, but two criminals on her team. Suddenly the team begins to get notifications about a news item popping up across the internet.

The actor who had previously backed out of the Barro commercial(Byun Woo Suk) has been revealed to have once worked as a host in a bar. A debate arises over whether or not to remove his name from the trending search words. Tammy is against deleting the searches while Scarlett argues that this is his personal life. Tammy argues that there will be a backlash against Barro if they do it. Ultimately, Brian sides with Tammy and does not delete the search words.

Gaming Division

Park Morgan arrives for a meeting with members of Barro’s gaming division. He expresses surprise at the late call and gratitude over his company’s inclusion in the project. As he settles in, Morgan hears others in the room complaining that they had already chosen another company and wondering who Morgan knew to get hired like that. When Pyo Joon Soo arrives at the meeting, Morgan suspects he knows how he got this job. Asked for his opinion on the project, Morgan replies with a question of his own, asking why Barro decided to hire his company. When nobody seems to even know what work his company has done before, he quits the job and leaves a frustrated Pyo Joon Soo behind.

Meanwhile, Tammy has bumped into Song Ga Gyeong in a coffee shop. She is told that Unicon has hired Park Morgan’s team back onto their project. When asked why she hired him back on, Ga Gyeong replies that it was because of a plant.

Flashback

Morgan tells Director Song that this breed of plant needs very little care, but it does need sunlight. If she just leaves it alone, it will live. She says that if the plant dies, she won’t have to care for it. Morgan responds that if she just lets it live healthily, she won’t have to care for it either. Director Song decides to make that plant the trivial reason she hires Park Morgan back.

Present

Angry over the job at Barro, Morgan ignores a call from Ta Mi. When He gets back to the office, Morgan finds her waiting for him. She is worried that Unicon only hired him back to hurt her somehow. But Morgan responds with his embarrassment over the Barro job. He tells Ta Mi that he doesn’t want to steal work from another company and he definitely doesn’t want to get work from a man Ta Mi used to date. The two part ways in frustration.

Meanwhile

The internet story about Han Min Kyu has blown up. Reporters and fans have surrounded his home hoping to get a glimpse of him. He’s not home though, because he is currently in the basement of Unicon, begging Song Ga Gyeong to remove his name from the real-time search list.

She refuses, telling the young actor that if he didn’t want people to talk about him, he shouldn’t have had that job. It’s is unfortunately not long before she wishes that she had just helped the man out.

Nobody seems to be certain if the young star is actually dead or not. Articles pop up all over the internet reporting his suicide attempt and claiming that he has died. However, none of the articles come from a reputable source. Scarlett immediately tells the media team to find any articles on the Han Min Kyu’s suicide that are abusive, obscene, or full of rumors. She tells them to delete those articles from Barro’s search results. Meanwhile, Unicon posts about the actor’s death on his bio but Barro does not follow suit.

At the hospital

Director Song calls the Unicon office to find out who authorized the change in Han Min Kyu’s biography. As she watches doctors fight to revive the actor, Song Ga Gyeong demands that it gets changed back immediately. Han Min Kyu survives and the news reports that his death was announced in error.

Meanwhile, a gas pump jockey sees a small child asleep in a car without a seatbelt and remembers a different search trend he had seen earlier in the day.

Barro

Tammy struggles with guilt over Han Min Kyu’s suicide attempt. Brian reminds her that he is the boss and the decision was his to make. Tammy tells him that she thought at 38 she would always make the right decisions. She knows now that even the right decisions can have the wrong outcomes. Brian responds that at 48 you realize that other people might think the same way as you do, but that doesn’t make those things right. He reminds her that living right doesn’t mean you won’t also sometimes hurt other people. Joseph arrives bearing coffee and good news. Because of a gas station worker remembering a search word he’d seen, a kidnapper has been caught and a child returned safely to his mother.

Tammy moves out of the office to get a little work done while in a different environment. Suddenly the notifications on her phone go haywire. Her name has topped the real-time search words list. Scared and confused, Ta Mi finds herself face to face with Park Morgan who gives her a hat to disguise her face a bit. He grabs her laptop and takes her hand, telling her not to let go of him, and then leads her away from the prying eyes of the public.

Final Thoughts:

This episode really got things moving. We learn so much about the various characters and their histories. The discussion over the real-time search words list becomes more clearly understood as the real repercussions of the trending list become more obvious. I’m still loving this drama. If you haven’t checked it out yet, I really encourage you to give it a chance. Now that it’s completed you can watch the whole show at once if you want.
