What Do I Watch Next?

Reason to Watch: Mr. Sunshine

The countdown has begun!  This Saturday, July 7 is the premiere of the wildly anticipated drama, Mr. Sunshine.   Set in the early 1900’s just before the Japanese occupation of Joseon (modern day Korea,) Mr. Sunshine tells the story of a young boy who escaped Joseon on an American military ship, only to return years later as an American soldier.  [source]

While the premise is intriguing in its own right, the real reason everyone wants to watch this drama is because of the writer, Kim Eun-Sook.  Her previous works include Goblin, Descendants of the Sun, and Heirs.  Being the writer of even one of those dramas would have been enough to make Kim Eun-Sook famous, but being the writer of all three has make Kim Eun-Sook a writing legend with networks begging to air her dramas.  Whats more, joining her this time is the PD from Goblin and Descendants of the Sun.

Although writing and directing are a large part of a drama’s success, ultimately a great drama needs a great cast.  However, Mr. Sunshine does not lack for incredible actors.  Playing the leading man is Lee Byung Hun, whose previous works include GI Joe: the Rise of Cobra and its sequel, among other Hollywood blockbusters.  Starring as the hero’s femme fatale is Kim Tae-Ri(The Handmaiden) with Yoo Yeon-Suk(Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim) rounding out the trio as the second male lead.  (Casting even one of these actors would get my attention; but, cast all three and I’m popping the popcorn now.)

What do you think? With so much hype, can this writing and directing duo make the drama magic happen again?  Join us this Saturday, July 7 for the premiere of Mr. Sunshine.
