Drama to share with a kdrama first timer:  Descendants of the Sun

  • Name: Descendants of the Sun
  • Where to watch: viki.com or dramafever.com
  • Episodes: 19
  • Why Watch: So you’ve finally talked your bestie into watching a kdrama for the first time (Fist Pump!) but you aren’t sure which drama will be the perfect addiction gateway?  You can not go wrong with Descendants of the Sun.  This drama has everything in it: action scenes, gripping romance, medical drama, military action, humor, stunning cinematography, and a pace that will keep you spellbound from minute one.  The story follows the love story of Yoo Shi Jin(Song Jong Ki), a member of Korea’s secret service, and Kang Mo Yeon(Song Hye Gyo), a gutsy surgeon, as they brave the dangers of an earthquake on a foreign relief mission.  The drama was so successful when it aired that it broke records for its station and the network extended its run.  One reason for the steamy chemistry between its leads was their behind-the-scenes romance, which ultimately culminated in their marriage the following year.

Additional recommendations: Healer, Boys Before Flowers, Moonlight Drawn By Clouds.

Drama to laugh with friends: My Love from Another Star

You Who Came From the Stars Hug

  • Name: My Love from Another Star/You Who Came from the Stars
  • Where to Watch: viki.com and dramafever.com
  • Episodes: 21 (and an epilogue)
  • Why Watch: I may be prejudiced, since this was my first drama and the source of my head-over-heels drama addiction, but My Love from Another Star is one of the funniest and most heartwarming dramas you will ever see.  Set in modern times, it tells the story of an alien (I know, but hang in there with me) who has been living on earth for a thousand years waiting for a chance to return home.  When suddenly he(Kim Soo Hyun) meets Cheong Song Yi(Jun Ji Hyun), an actress with a rockin’ case of goofball, who will turn his world upside down.  Jun Ji Hyun plays her character with a hilariously relatable flair which turns the most banal line into pure comedy gold.  However, be warned, the ending was rushed during the end of production, so the directors later released an epilogue which is infinitely more satisfying than the original ending.  A MUST watch drama.

Drama to catch-up on: Sketch

Sketch Kdrama Poster

  • Name: Sketch
  • Where to Watch: only on dramafever.com
  • Episodes: 16
  • Why Watch: Currently airing drama Sketch is currently the wildest, most mindbending drama of 2018.  A sci-fi drama, Sketch tells the story of a rough, badass cop(Rain) who one day meets a strange woman(Lee Sun Bin) with the ability to sketch people’s deaths.  What starts as a simple thriller soon turns into an Inception-esque ride as the cop, the woman, and her team try to prevent the deaths she “sees.”   With only two weeks left before the final episode, this July 4th is the perfect time to get caught up on the drama that will be your new obsession.

Additional recommendations: What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim, Lawless Lawyer.

New Drama: Your House Helper

Your House Helper Kdrama

  • Name: Your House Helper
  • Where to Watch: only on viki.com
  • Episodes: TBA
  • Why Watch: What could be more restful than watching a handsome man clean a house – watching him clean my house.  But since that is not an option, this drama is the next best thing.  Airing for the first time this July 4th, Your House Helper tells the story of a handsome man(Ha Seok Jin) who helps a group of women put their lives back together by cleaning their house.   The story promises to be very cathartic as Ha Seok Jin’s character will listen to the women’s stories and help them recover emotionally.  But, we all know why we’re really going to watch this:Your_House_Helper-TP
